TN Assembly Speaker Expunges Anti-Karunanidhi Remarks; Vijay Apologizes!

Chennai witnessed a moment of parliamentary tension recently as Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar took decisive action, expunging remarks made by Law Minister R. Nirmalkumar against the late Chief Minister and DMK leader M.

Karunanidhi. The Speaker emphasized that he would not permit any speech or reference unrelated to the issue under discussion, particularly during special calling-attention motions. The incident unfolded when Minister Nirmalkumar was responding to a special calling-attention motion concerning the tragic killing of three Tamils in a Karnataka forest.

During his address, he made comments targeting Karunanidhi.

Speaker Prabhakar promptly intervened, stating, "I do not know whose attention you seek to draw through your remarks. I cannot allow anything that is not directly related to the issue.

You can certainly refer to similar incidents associated with the subject being discussed.” This strong stance underscored the Speaker's commitment to maintaining parliamentary focus and decorum. In the wake of the Speaker's ruling and to defuse the situation, Joseph Vijay, a prominent member of the Assembly, immediately rose to apologize on behalf of Minister Nirmalkumar.

This swift apology helped to address the controversy.

Further reinforcing procedural rules, Speaker Prabhakar also clarified that only the member who had given notice for a special calling-attention motion under Rule 55 of the Assembly Rules would be allowed to speak. He also offered guidance to members, advising them to remain seated when their party whip stood to address the House or the Speaker, highlighting the whip's role in fostering cordiality within the legislative body.
