MINNEAPOLIS — Pro- and anti-ICE demonstrators clashed in downtown Minneapolis on Saturday, the latest scene in a widening confrontation over the Department of Homeland Security’s intensified immigration enforcement in the Twin Cities. Officials say more than 2,000 federal officers have been deployed to augment local police, and the Governor’s office has mobilized National Guard troops who were ready to assist but had not been deployed to city streets as of Saturday.
Barely a week into the crackdown, crowds gathered outside City Hall and along major thoroughfares, with protesters on both sides trading chants and insults. A march supporting tougher immigration measures and a counter-protest opposing them faced off in a tense standoff. In the melee, snowballs and water balloons fizzed through the air as city police in armored vans moved to separate the groups.
One organizer, Jake Lang, who had announced plans to stage an anti-Islam and pro-ICE rally, reportedly left with bruises and scrapes after the scuffles. Lang had previously described his intention to burn a Quran on the steps of City Hall, remarks that drew condemnation from opponents but were not confirmed as carried out. Lang has a controversial background, including prior charges connected to assaulting an officer and civil disorder before receiving clemency last year; he has since announced a bid for the U.S. Senate in Florida.
Off the ground, the crowd also reflected the broader legal and political stakes. In a related legal development, a federal judge ordered that immigration officers in Minnesota refrain from detentions or the use of force against peaceful protesters, banning arrests without probable cause and limiting crowd-control tools against protected speech. The ruling creates a legal shield around demonstrators even as enforcement actions continue.
As tensions mounted, police sought to keep streets safe and prevent escalation, while activists on both sides called for de-escalation and expressed concern about possible violence.
