Delhi to test cloud seeding today to tackle very poor air

Delhi's air quality remained in the very poor category, with CPCB data showing an AQI of 301 at 4 p.m. on Monday, up from 315 a day earlier. The city has logged several very poor air days this month, prompting officials to explore emergency measures.

Delhi is eyeing a cloud seeding trial today if weather conditions are favorable. An aircraft, based in Kanpur, could fly to Delhi for a midday operation around 12:30-1 p.m., marking the first such test in the city. Officials describe the move as an experiment and say results are not guaranteed.

The government is also keeping an eye on weather factors, including moisture from Cyclone Montha and a Western Disturbance that could affect cloud formation. Delhi's environment minister said discussions on artificial rain are ongoing and acknowledged the trial as new.

The broader air-quality management plan under Grap Stage 2 remains in effect, with measures focused on dust mitigation, transportation restrictions where applicable, and other emission-control actions as authorities monitor conditions. The interplay of meteorological factors continues to shape decisions on interventions.

Residents and experts remain cautiously optimistic, viewing cloud seeding as a possible tool but stressing that it is experimental and not a guaranteed fix.
