Trinamool Congress (TMC) lawmaker Mahua Moitra has brought to light a significant incident, writing to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to intervene after she was allegedly asked to vacate a circuit house in her Krishnanagar constituency late on a Friday night.
Moitra, who had checked into the local circuit house at 6:15 PM after the Lok Sabha was adjourned, stated that she was ordered by the district administration of West Bengal's Nadia to leave the premises at 9:47 PM. She described this as a grave violation of her rights and a direct threat to her safety as a woman Member of Parliament.
In her letter to Speaker Birla, Moitra emphasized the broader implications of the incident, arguing that the Women’s Reservation Bill becomes a "matter of jest" if the Speaker's office cannot ensure the dignity and security of the 74 women parliamentarians currently serving. "A woman MP, staying alone, being asked to vacate her rightful accommodation at 9:47 PM not only gravely violates her rights but brings into question the safety and security accorded to women by the ruling dispensation," she wrote, urging immediate action.
Adding to the gravity of her allegations, Moitra claimed that a large crowd had gathered outside the circuit house, shouting 'Jai Shree Ram' slogans after she refused to vacate. The Nadia administration, however, reportedly sent an order at 10:52 PM stating the circuit house would be unavailable from August 14 for "annual upkeep," which she implied was a pretext for the eviction attempt.
