Deadly Cross-Border Strikes: Pakistan's Raids Kill Dozens of Afghan Civilians

Overnight airstrikes carried out by Pakistani forces have resulted in the deaths of at least 36 civilians and injured over 160 others, according to Afghan officials. This grave incident on Monday has significantly escalated tensions between the neighboring nations.

Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for Afghanistan’s Taliban government, reported that Pakistani forces targeted a home in Chamkani district, Paktia province, killing an elderly man and a child. When local residents gathered to assist, the area was reportedly struck again, leading to the deaths of 28 villagers and injuring 158 more. Additionally, six people, primarily women and children, were killed in a separate strike on a village in Giyan district, Paktika province. Another civilian home in Kunar province was also hit, causing no human casualties but resulting in the loss of about 30 livestock.

Pakistan, however, offered a different account. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar stated that Pakistani security forces conducted a ground operation along the border late Sunday, followed by “calibrated strikes” against militant hideouts and safe havens. He claimed these operations killed 29 fighters and were a direct response to multiple militant attacks across Pakistan. Afghan officials swiftly condemned these strikes as a “cowardly act of aggression” and an “act of brutality.”

The Pakistani operation followed a recent militant attack targeting the paramilitary Rangers' regional headquarters in Karachi, which claimed the lives of three soldiers. Security forces killed three attackers and arrested another, identified as an Afghan national. Pakistani authorities primarily attribute the surge in militant attacks in recent years to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and its allied groups, who are distinct from but allied with the Afghan Taliban.
