Finding Balance: Staying Connected Without Drowning in Content
We chase a cleaner feed and feel lighter offline, then slip back into doomscrolling. This piece explores the detox paradox, FOMO, and why online life keeps pulling us back.
The Failed Detox Cycle
Haven’t we all tried, at least once, to detox from social media only to end up right back, doomscrolling... I certainly have. It usually starts with me deactivating Instagram, deleting X, telling myself it was time to detox and get in touch with reality.
For a little while, it actually works. I feel lighter... free, more productive and relaxed. But then I talk to someone and soon enough I get left behind, I miss a meme, a trend, or some random brainrot that everyone is talking about. And just like that, I crawl back, drowning in content that has nothing to offer me.
The Paradox of Being Online
This back and forth is quite a paradox with a lot of people in our generation. We feel so much better when we're offline but then we also have the constant nagging in the back of our heads that drives us to need to be updated on every little thing that happens everywhere. The Fomo is real.
The stimulation overload is only getting worse. Our brains are flooded with content, targeted to give us dopamine. On top of this, we also have ragebait reels running around ensuring we get mad at something or the other.
Finding the Balance
The only way out of this hole is to find the right balance. We cannot entirely quit social media and culture as it will always be a part of our lives but we can find a way to keep a hold on how much content we digest while ensuring that we also maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Content aimed at overstimulating us will continue to overflow in social media, all we can do is exercise some discipline and self control ensuring we know how to balance all the aspects of our life.
