Gautam Adani urges India to chart its own growth amid fractured global alliances, outlining a $75B energy-transition push and a call for sovereign energy leadership.
At IIT Dhanbad's 100th foundation day, Gautam Adani warned that India must define its own growth path in a world where global alliances are increasingly fractured. He stressed that India’s sovereignty in the 21st century will depend on mastering the resources beneath its soil and the energy systems that power its economy. “India's sovereignty in the 21st century will depend on a nation’s command over its natural resources and its energy systems,” he said, urging the country to chart a development course that is free from external dictates.
Adani highlighted a crucial point for a nation that is already the world’s third-largest electricity consumer, arguing that external pressures should not delegitimise India’s aspirational goals. He warned against what he termed “narrative colonisation,” where high-emitting nations attempt to prescribe how India should grow despite India having one of the world’s lowest per-capita emissions. The emphasis, he said, should be on building sovereign capabilities in resources, energy, and technology rather than allowing others to set India’s narrative.
A central pillar of his message was economic self-reliance through energy transition. The Adani Group plans to invest over $75 billion in the energy transition space over the next five years, a move he framed as foundational to India’s long-term growth and energy security. He urged India to resist external pressures and to advance its own development path, describing the era as a “second freedom struggle” for economic and resource independence.
To illustrate the stakes, Adani urged India to learn from history without letting it constrain ambition. He cited past episodes where external powers tried to shape India’s education and innovation landscape, arguing that today’s India must be the one to transform dreams into realities. With global alliances shifting and competition for energy resources intensifying, he emphasized that India must cultivate sovereign capabilities that safeguard its standard of living and strategic interests.
Overall, his message was clear: define India’s growth path domestically, invest boldly in energy transition, and resist narratives that seek to curb India’s aspirations. In doing so, he argued, India can secure its energy future while strengthening its position in a changing global order.
