The Grenfell community recently marked the ninth anniversary of the devastating fire that claimed 72 lives, an occasion described by activist Damel Carayol as "particularly difficult." Carayol, a founder of the grassroots campaign group Humanity for Grenfell, spoke to BBC London ahead of a poignant memorial event.
Carayol, who lost his cousin Mary Mendy and her daughter Khadija Saye in the 14 June 2017 tragedy, revealed that the slow dismantling of the tower has intensified the distress felt by many. "Something about this year kind of tipped a lot of people over to feeling the stress, the strain, the exhaustion of fighting year after year… when there's nothing going on it can drain you, and quite a few people are feeling that way," he stated, emphasizing the prolonged emotional toll.
Despite the exhaustion, Carayol affirmed the group's unwavering resolve: "We will carry on until justice is served." Their fight extends beyond the immediate victims, encompassing all those living in cladded flats who still await the removal of dangerous materials. "We're doing it for everybody," he stressed, highlighting the broader impact of their advocacy.
The memorial service on Sunday was described as "special." Attendees lit 72 candles, each bearing the name of a life lost, and participated in hymns like "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art." Carayol himself, along with the Humanity for Grenfell Gospel Choir, performed songs such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Where Was the Water," and "One Love" to close the service.
Humanity for Grenfell was formed to address "this horrible situation," and Carayol's candid admission that this ninth year has been personally challenging underscores the profound and lasting grief. The anniversary serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing quest for accountability and the urgent need for systemic changes to prevent such a disaster from ever happening again.
