England manager Thomas Tuchel has lauded the reception his team has received in Mexico City, describing local fans as "friendly and respectful" despite heightened security concerns ahead of their crucial World Cup 2026 last-16 tie against Mexico. The Three Lions' arrival was met with significant precautions, but Tuchel has moved to quell any fears of disruption.
Earlier in the tournament, Ecuador had voiced complaints to FIFA about noisy Mexican supporters outside their hotel, who reportedly blared music, revved motorbikes, and honked horns late into the night before their match. This led to concerns that England might face similar disturbances, prompting FIFA to implement enhanced security measures. These included members of Mexico's National Guard guarding the entrance to England's hotel and police officers in riot gear stationed outside.
However, Tuchel was quick to dismiss these worries, stating that his experience and that of his squad since landing in Mexico has been "very respectful and emotional and very supportive towards our team." He further added that the reception was "nicer than I expected." The manager acknowledged FIFA's efforts, noting, "We had no issues tonight and I think Fifa took care of the situation. We have security around the hotel so we expect a good night's sleep."
Emphasizing a calm approach, Tuchel remarked, "I don't want to talk about problems that don't exist yet. If they come, we will accept them. The best way to approach is to be relaxed and calm." He highlighted that even if some sleep was lost, the team would have time to recover before their six o'clock kick-off. As England prepares for what promises to be a challenging match in the "Azteca cauldron," Tuchel's serene demeanor aims to ensure his side remains composed amidst the fervent Mexican atmosphere.
