14-Year-Old Shrey Parikh Crowns Spelling Bee Glory with Record-Breaking Win!

Imagine having just 90 seconds to spell as many complex words as possible while the world watches. That is exactly the challenge 14-year-old Shrey Parikh faced, and he didn’t just meet it—he shattered records. Shrey was crowned the champion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee after a breathtaking lightning-round tiebreaker that left spectators in awe.

In a high-pressure "spell-off," Shrey managed to correctly spell a staggering 32 out of 35 words. To put that in perspective, he was firing off correct letters almost every three seconds. This performance secured him the top spot and the prestigious $52,000 cash prize, marking a triumphant end to his third appearance at the national competition.

The competition was fierce until the very end. Shrey went head-to-head with 12-year-old Ishaan Gupta, who also put up an incredible performance by correctly spelling 25 words in the same timeframe. They were the final two standing out of 247 competitors, ranging in age from nine to 15, who had gathered for the annual event.

The finals this year highlighted a continuing trend of excellence within the Indian-American community. Out of the nine finalists who made it to the final stage, five were of Indian origin. Shrey’s victory is a testament to years of dedication and study, proving that persistence pays off after his previous attempts in earlier years.

When asked for his advice to other students aiming for success, Shrey kept it simple and encouraging.
