Gaza Flotilla Activists Allege Brutal Abuse After Israeli Detention

Activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla are speaking out about harrowing experiences during their recent detention by Israeli forces. After attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza, hundreds of participants claim they were subjected to physical abuse, electric shocks, and deep humiliation during their time in custody.
The incident began in international waters, roughly 400 kilometers off the coast of Israel. A fleet of approximately 50 boats was intercepted by the military. While the activists intended to reach Gaza, their journey ended in a confrontation that many describe as violent and traumatizing. According to those on board, the treatment they received during the interception and subsequent detention went far beyond standard security protocols.
Among the most serious allegations are reports of activists being hit, slapped, and even targeted with tasers. Some South African participants specifically alleged that they were shocked with electricity while in custody. There are also disturbing claims regarding sexual violence and systematic humiliation during the screening process. These accounts have sparked international concern as the activists began arriving in Turkey following their deportation.
Around 420 activists were eventually sent to Turkey on Thursday after being processed by Israeli authorities. As they shared their stories with the media, the mood was one of shock and defiance. Many insisted that they were in international waters when the interception occurred, questioning the legality of the military action so far from the coastline.
In response to these mounting allegations, the Israeli prison service has issued a firm denial. Officials state that the claims of mistreatment and abuse are false and that all procedures were handled according to regulation. Despite this, the activists maintain their version of events, calling for more oversight on how detainees are treated during high-profile maritime interceptions.
