Stormzy to produce Ian Wright biopic, tracing resilience and rise
Stormzy's Merky Films will co-produce a biopic of Ian Wright, tracing his Windrush-era South London roots to Arsenal legend and beyond.
Stormzy has announced he is to produce a biopic of former Arsenal, Crystal Palace and England striker Ian Wright. The project is in development with Merky Films, with Tom Wilton writing and directing. Stormzy will serve as executive producer, and the filmmakers describe Wright's story as a deeply moving tale of heartache, determination and unbelievable triumph, set against a working-class South London community and the Windrush generation.
Wright's rise in football spanned from his Crystal Palace debut in 1985 at age 22 to his time at Arsenal from 1991, where he became a club favourite and was capped for England, including scoring twice in the 1990 FA Cup final. After later spells at West Ham and Celtic, he retired in 2000 and moved into media, hosting shows and appearing as a pundit. The film aims to explore not just Wright's on-field exploits but the life off the pitch, including his family's Windrush-era story and the broader changes in Britain since then.
The project, produced with Stormzy's Merky Films, is positioned as a resilient, empowering narrative about family, community, and self-belief, told through Wrighty's journey from South London to footballing and broadcasting success. Wright himself notes that retelling his story helps illuminate the experiences of his family and peers, and the ongoing relevance of those early days to the present.
