PM Modi inaugurates Meerut Metro and the 82-km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor, promising faster travel and regional growth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today flagged off the Meerut Metro and dedicated the 82-km Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat rapid rail corridor, marking a milestone in the country’s infrastructure push. The Meerut Metro will operate on the same corridor and is anticipated to become India’s fastest metro network.
The Namo Bharat corridor is designed for speeds up to 180 kmph and is set to slash travel times between Delhi and Meerut, with connections to Sahibabad, Ghaziabad, Modinagar and Meerut. Officials have announced development works in the region totaling ₹12,930 crore, while reports on the overall corridor cost place it around ₹30,274 crore. Nearly 14 km of the route lies in Delhi, and about 68 km in Uttar Pradesh, underscoring the project’s scale across two key states.
Proponents say the project will boost regional connectivity, create jobs, and improve freight movement, while residents anticipate shorter commutes and new economic opportunities as the network integrates with existing rail services. The Meerut Metro is expected to soon offer a faster, more reliable urban transit option for residents and visitors alike, reinforcing the government’s push for a high-speed rail-enabled future.
As part of the inauguration, Modi highlighted the broader vision of rapid rail and metro modernization as a backbone for India’s growing economy, with the 82-km corridor serving as a model for future regional linkages and urban expansion.
