Scandal Erupts: 5 Arrested Over 'Fake' Candidates in Local Election

Authorities in Tameside have arrested five people as part of a major investigation into alleged electoral fraud during the recent local elections. Four men and one woman, ranging in age from 23 to 47, were taken into custody following a series of reports concerning the legitimacy of certain independent candidates.

The investigation centers on the St Peter’s ward, where concerns were raised both before and after the May 7 polls. It is alleged that 'fake' independent candidates were placed on the ballot paper specifically to split the opposition vote, potentially clearing a path for the Labour candidate. St Peter’s was notably the only ward in the area to return a Labour councillor, while the remaining 18 seats were swept by Reform candidates.

Greater Manchester Police launched the probe following investigative reports that highlighted suspicious candidate entries.
