Russia Closes German Cultural Centers Amid Drone Plot Tensions

Russia has announced it will close German cultural centers across the country, a significant move that escalates diplomatic tensions with Berlin. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the decision on Thursday, September 3, 2026.

This action follows Germany's accusation that Moscow was behind an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and Berlin's subsequent closure of the Russian Consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in its capital.

Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg would be shut down.

He emphasized that any other response from Russia would signal a lack of “self-respect.” Speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Foreign Minister suggested that Germany “could not have failed to understand” that closing the Russian House would “signify the end of their cultural presence in Russia.” The controversy stems from an incident on August 4 when a drone carrying explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian plane at Leipzig/Halle Airport, a vital international freight hub supporting Ukraine.

The device was successfully defused. Western officials have widely accused Moscow of orchestrating a campaign of sabotage and disruption aimed at destabilizing European nations and undermining support for Ukraine.
