Congress to Rally in Delhi, Accuses EC of Politicising SIR
Congress plans a December rally in Delhi to protest alleged vote chori via the SIR, pledging legal and political action against what they call the EC’s politicisation.
The Congress has announced a December rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi to protest what they call vote chori and to challenge what they describe as the politicisation of the Election Commission through the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in 12 states. At a meeting at the party headquarters, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi outlined the plan after consulting senior leaders from 12 states. They indicated the rally would mobilise people around the issue and take the fight to the people in the early days of December.
They argued that the BJP-led central government is weaponising the SIR process to steal votes and urged supporters to monitor the revision to ensure eligible voters aren’t struck off. Gandhi reportedly pledged that the Congress will fight the issue politically, legally and organisationally, and asked state leaders to keep a close watch on the SIR process to prevent any eligible voter from being left out.
Earlier, Gandhi led a Voter Adhikar Yatra in Bihar to raise concerns about vote theft, though the party faced a tough showing in the state. In Bihar’s results, the Mahagathbandhan won 37.84% of the popular vote and 35 seats in the 243-member assembly, a reminder of the electoral battleground the Congress seeks to influence with its current strategy.
The party confirmed that the December rally would be the first week of the month, at Ramlila Maidan, as a show of strength and a platform to present their case to the people.
Analysts say the move underscores the persistence of electoral integrity debates in Indian politics, with opposition parties pressing for clearer rules around rolls and revisions and for accountability in the process.
