Notting Hill Carnival Dazzles for 60th, 'Overwhelmingly Positive' Despite Arrests

London's iconic Notting Hill Carnival once again transformed west London into a kaleidoscope of colour, music, and dance over the weekend, celebrating its landmark 60th anniversary. Hailed by police as "overwhelmingly positive and celebratory" for the vast majority of attendees, the event drew hundreds of thousands of revellers, cementing its status as Europe's biggest street party and "the greatest community-led event on the planet."

Sunday's family day was a vibrant display of Caribbean culture, with an array of mas bands, steel pan bands, and dancers filling the streets. Thousands of children, adorned in traditional carnival regalia featuring elaborate feathered plumes and towering headdresses, took part in the spectacular parade.

Elsewhere, dancers in glittering, rainbow-coloured costumes moved to the infectious rhythms of sound systems playing everything from samba to house and reggae, with Soca music proving to be a perennial favourite, blending American soul with Caribbean beats.

Despite the joyous atmosphere, the Metropolitan Police reported 169 arrests as of Sunday evening. Offences included possession of drugs and possession of weapons.

However, these incidents did not overshadow the overwhelmingly positive experience for the hundreds of thousands who gathered to celebrate.

The carnival continues to be a powerful testament to community spirit and cultural celebration.
