Indonesia Chokes on Toxic Haze as Devastating Fires Rage Amid Super El Niño

A suffocating haze has engulfed vast swathes of Indonesia's Kalimantan region, leaving residents struggling to breathe and visibility drastically reduced. For weeks, the air has been so thick that one local, Suwadi, described breathing it as "like smoking a cigarette." This escalating crisis stems from intense land and forest fires, which have ravaged tens of thousands of acres, including precious ancient rainforest.

The impact extends far beyond Kalimantan, the Indonesian side of Borneo island. The toxic haze has drifted across borders, placing neighboring Malaysia and Singapore on high alert. The immediate health consequences for those directly exposed are alarming, with health ministry data from West Kalimantan showing a tenfold spike in emergency room visits for respiratory symptoms since July, rising from 500 to approximately 5,000 per week.

Concerns are growing for vulnerable populations, including babies, the elderly, and pregnant women.

Daily life is severely disrupted. While many adults still commute to work, and children initially attended school, some classes have now been suspended. Parents are increasingly advocating for a switch to online learning to protect their children's health.

The annual fires are often attributed to "slash and burn" agricultural practices, used primarily to clear land for palm oil plantations, a commodity in which Indonesia is the world's largest producer.

Compounding the disaster this year is a "super" El Niño phenomenon, which authorities believe is intensifying the blazes and is expected to peak in September. In a poignant display of desperation, communities in affected areas, such as South Sumatra, have gathered for mass Islamic prayers, seeking rain to douse the relentless inferno.
