An evening walk on the Aligarh Muslim University campus turned tragic when Rao Danish Ali, a computer science teacher at ABK Union High School on the campus, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen.
According to university officials, the incident occurred around 9 pm near the Kennedy Auditorium, when two masked assailants on a scooter approached Danish and two of his colleagues, spoke briefly, and then fired at close range after a brief exchange.
Danish was rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. He had been teaching computer science at ABK High School on the campus for about 11 years, and the attack came as he was reportedly returning from the university canteen where he often grabbed tea.
Authorities have formed six police teams to probe the case, reviewing leads and tracking the route the attackers likely used after fleeing the scene. One correspondent's account quoted a gunman as saying, “You don’t know me yet, now you will,” before the firing.
Police have not disclosed a motive yet, and family members have suggested the possibility that the assailants might have known Danish. The campus and broader city are on edge as investigators pursue leads and reinforce security in the wake of the incident.
