Oxford museum returns 500-year-old Saint Tirumankai Alvar statue to Tamil Nadu

Oxford's Ashmolean Museum has decided to return the 16th‑century bronze statue of Saint Tirumankai Alvar to India. The idol, about 57–60 cm tall, was taken from a Tamil Nadu temple in the 19th century and appeared later in a Sotheby’s auction in 1967, entering a private collection.

Provenance research began in 2019 after a French scholar spotted a temple photograph from 1957 that linked the statue to the museum's holdings. The analysis, including metal testing and archival checks, established a clearer origin and prompted formal discussions with India.

On March 3, the museum notified the Indian High Commission of its decision to return the statue for repatriation to a temple in Tamil Nadu, a move celebrated as restoring a direct cultural link with the saint who figures in the Divya Prabandham and Vaishnavism.

Supporters say the case reflects a broader shift in museum ethics, with more institutions examining provenance and returning objects that leave their origins through controversial routes. The repatriation also underlines cultural diplomacy between Britain and India as heritage finds its way home.
