A horrific car crash on a busy dual carriageway in Derby has resulted in the deaths of four people, including a baby. The incident occurred when a red Hyundai car veered off the A38 and collided with trees between the A50 Toyota Island and the A516 at approximately 11:00 PM BST on Saturday.
Derbyshire Police confirmed that two women, aged 18 and 30, and a 36-year-old man died at the scene. A baby girl involved in the crash was rushed to the hospital but sadly passed away shortly after. All four victims were reported to be from Leeds. The 33-year-old male driver of the car was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He was subsequently taken to the hospital for serious injuries sustained in the crash.
The relatives of the deceased have been informed and are currently receiving support from specialist police officers. A spokesperson for the police expressed condolences, stating, "Our thoughts are with them at this most distressing time."
The Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service also responded to the 999 call, dispatching three crews to the scene. They echoed the sentiments of the police, adding, "Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this terrible incident, the deceased and all of the emergency services who responded to the scene."
The A38 carriageway remained closed for several hours as emergency services dealt with the aftermath of the collision and conducted initial investigations, but it has since been reopened to traffic. Authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the crash or possesses any dashcam footage that could be relevant to the investigation to contact the police.
