India's burgeoning space sector has officially entered a new era with the successful launch of Vikram-1, the nation's first privately developed orbital rocket, by Skyroot Aerospace. This historic event, part of the 'Mission Aagaman,' marks a monumental stride for India's private players in the global space race. The launch took place on July 18 at 11:30 am IST from the First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
The significance of Vikram-1 cannot be overstated. It's designed to ferry small satellites weighing up to 450 kg into Low Earth Orbit. More than just a payload delivery system, this maiden flight was a critical test to gather in-flight data on the rocket's propulsion, stage separation, navigation, avionics, and overall performance. Skyroot Aerospace aims to validate the vehicle's behavior from liftoff through ascent, refining future launches and commercial operations.
This 22-meter tall rocket boasts cutting-edge technology, featuring a lightweight, all-carbon-composite structure and advanced 3D-printed liquid engines. These innovations make Vikram-1 not only lighter and faster to manufacture but also highly cost-effective, positioning India as an even more competitive player in the commercial space launch market.
