TN Boosts Farmer Support: "Historic" Hike in Paddy & Sugarcane Incentives!

Chennai, Tamil Nadu, witnessed a significant announcement today as Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay unveiled a "historic" increase in procurement incentives for paddy and sugarcane farmers across the state. This substantial raise aims to bolster agricultural welfare, a decision made despite the state's current financial challenges, according to the Chief Minister.
Addressing the Assembly under Rule 110, CM Vijay emphasized the government's commitment to protecting the interests of farmers. "We have decided to increase the state incentive for paddy and sugarcane to an unprecedented level in the history of Tamil Nadu, considering that the welfare of the farmers who cultivate paddy and sugarcane needs to be protected," he stated.
With the paddy procurement season slated to begin on September 1, farmers can look forward to enhanced support. The state government's incentive for fine grade paddy will be increased to ₹289 per quintal, bringing the total procurement price, including the minimum support price, to ₹2,750 per quintal. For common grade paddy, the incentive will be ₹159 per quintal, resulting in a procurement price of ₹2,600 per quintal. This marks the first time in history that the state government has increased the incentive for paddy by more than ₹156 in a single year.
Sugarcane farmers are also set to benefit immensely. The incentive for sugarcane will see a remarkable increase of ₹709 per tonne, pushing the total procurement price to ₹4,000 per tonne. The Chief Minister highlighted that while the Centre has fixed ₹3,290.50 per metric tonne for farmers supplying sugarcane in the 2025-26 milling year, the Tamil Nadu government will provide an additional special incentive of ₹709.5 per tonne. This year's hike in the special incentive for sugarcane, at ₹360.5, significantly surpasses the total increase of only ₹156 seen over the last five years combined.
Chief Minister Vijay concluded by assuring that the state government stands firm in its resolve to support farmers in their agricultural endeavors and rural livelihoods, underscoring a strong focus on the farming community's prosperity.
