Colombian security forces have successfully apprehended Luis Saúl Pérez Nieto, a suspected senior leader of the notorious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, a development hailed by the U.S. Southern Command as a testament to deepening military cooperation between the two historically allied nations.

This significant arrest, which occurred on Thursday, August 27, marks an early victory for Colombia's new conservative president, Abelardo de la Espriella, who assumed office earlier this month with a firm promise to dismantle the country's powerful drug cartels with assistance from Washington. Pérez Nieto, known by the aliases “Páez” and “Nairobi,” is accused by Colombian authorities of orchestrating the gang's extensive weapons and drug-trafficking networks across the region, playing a pivotal role in the expansion of Tren de Aragua into Peru.

Adding to Pérez Nieto's notorious profile, Colombian police revealed that he had previously escaped from the Tocorón prison in 2023, along with the gang's overall leader, Héctor “Niño Guerrero” Guerrero Flores.
