Bangladesh envoy hails 'organic' ties with India on Vijay Divas

During Vijay Divas at the High Commission of Bangladesh, the High Commissioner, Riaz Hamidullah, described India-Bangladesh ties as an 'organic relation' that is deep and multi-layered. He said the relationship rests on mutual inter-dependence and should be sustained through trust and understanding, with engagements thriving for the benefit of both peoples.
Hamidullah highlighted the shared past and culture, the contiguous geography, and even shared agro-ecology, which bind the two nations. He stressed that securing peace, stability, and prosperity for both sides remains a core interest.
The envoy paid tribute to the sacrifice of 1,668 Indian soldiers who died for the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971, and recalled the contributions of war heroes such as Lt. Gen. J. F. R. Jacob, Lt. Gen. B. D. Hira, and Maj. General G. S. Nagra. He also reminded the audience of the brutal violence of Operation Searchlight that marked that era and the heavy toll it took on lives.
The speech also acknowledged that ties between the two nations have experienced moments of strain, noting that relations have been described as cold since deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024. Yet Hamidullah urged that Bangladesh-India relations remain deep and multi-layered, insisting that practical, impactful steps must continue to translate shared values into tangible outcomes for both peoples.
