Sir Keir Starmer, currently attending the G7 summit, has announced a significant economic boost for the United Kingdom. He revealed that French and Indian firms are set to invest a colossal £1.3 billion into the UK's burgeoning clean energy and artificial intelligence sectors. This substantial influx of capital is projected to generate over 1,400 new jobs across key northern cities, including Manchester, Leeds, and Birmingham.
The investment package includes a major commitment of £1 billion from InfraVia, a French private equity firm. This funding will be directed towards developing advanced battery storage solutions and a flexible energy platform, crucial for bolstering the UK's energy supply, especially when renewable energy sources fluctuate. Additionally, India's Hexaware Technologies is contributing £25 million, with Atri Energy Transition adding a further £300 million, both earmarked for large-scale battery storage development.
Speaking on the announcement, Sir Keir emphasized his focus on positioning the UK as a prime destination for international investment. He highlighted the importance of offering global investors the stability and competitive environment necessary for growth, particularly amidst current global uncertainties. Starmer stated, “These investments will create thousands of high-skilled jobs, back British innovation and strengthen our energy system so families are better protected from global shocks.” This move is seen as a strategic step to future-proof the UK economy and energy infrastructure.
