"Cowboy Builder" Crackdown: New Measures to Protect Homeowners!

The UK government is launching a significant crackdown on "cowboy builders" who exploit homeowners, alongside new measures targeting private bailiffs. Andy Burnham unveiled these plans, which aim to safeguard household funds and ensure consumers can find reliable tradespeople.

The initiative comes as home improvement grievances rank among the most frequent issues reported to Citizens Advice, with over one in four adults experiencing problems during their latest project, from shoddy work to disappearing contractors.

A core component of these new measures is the introduction of a dedicated register designed to help consumers identify trusted tradespeople.

This will allow homeowners to make informed decisions and avoid unscrupulous operators.

Starting in September, a government-backed scheme will enable companies to sign up to an approved code, demonstrating their adherence to high standards in customer service, transparency, and dispute resolution.

Further bolstering consumer protection, a fresh payment system is set to launch next week. This innovative system will allow householders to avoid hefty upfront costs by linking payments directly to project milestones. This means money will only be released as work is completed to satisfaction, drastically reducing the risk of being left with unfinished work and lost payments.

The Prime Minister emphasized the severity of the issue, stating,

Cowboy builders don't just rip people off. They leave families with months of stress, the disruption of unfinished work, and that horrible feeling of being taken advantage of. Not only that, but they give the vast majority of decent, hardworking tradespeople a bad name.

The PM added, "So we're putting the cowboys out of business.

These changes mean you'll now have the option to make sure your money is held safely and released bit by bit as the work gets done." This initiative is part of a broader effort to "make Britain fairer," following previous crackdowns on issues like subscription traps and fake discounts.

Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds further explained that these reforms are designed to "protect consumers, support reputable traders" and prevent home improvements from turning into a nightmare for families across the country. The government’s goal is to ensure peace of mind for homeowners and uphold the reputation of honest tradespeople.
