Patna police are intensifying their probe into the NEET aspirant's death, focusing on possible sexual assault. The forensic report on the clothes worn by the 18-year-old student at the time of hospitalisation detected semen traces, prompting DNA profiling to identify the assailant and link it to suspects. The investigation will also compare the DNA found with the accused and other potential suspects, police officials said.
The 18-year-old from Jehanabad, who was staying at Shambhu Girls Hostel in Patna for coaching, was found unconscious earlier this month and died on January 11 after days in a coma. The case has sparked wide protests in the city after her family alleged a cover-up and demanded accountability.
A post-mortem report had highlighted injuries to her private parts and nail abrasions on her body, underscoring the gravity of the allegations. In a development in the probe, the Special Investigation Team suspended two police officials: Hemant Jha, Additional Officer-in-Charge of Kadamkuan Police station, and Sub-Inspector Roshni Kumari, for alleged dereliction of duty in handling the case.
Authorities said the SIT will now obtain a DNA profile from the semen traces and attempt to match it with the DNA of the arrested person and other suspects as the investigation proceeds. The family and local supporters have urged transparency and faster action as more evidence is gathered.
