Rahane recounted his decision to back Kuldeep for his Test debut against Australia in Dharamsala in 2017, a match where the young spinner immediately impressed with a crucial four-wicket haul. Despite Kuldeep's inexperience at the time, Rahane, then captain, believed in his potential as a 'quality spinner' and 'wicket-taker'. He firmly stated the importance of backing match-winners, acknowledging that sitting out multiple Tests after a single appearance can be incredibly taxing on a bowler's rhythm and development.
Over the years, Rahane has observed Kuldeep's significant growth, particularly noting how he has refined his game, including an increased speed in the air. He expressed immense satisfaction with Kuldeep’s improvement, especially in white-ball cricket where he has consistently delivered strong performances. Since his memorable debut, Kuldeep has played only 17 more Tests over the subsequent nine years, accumulating 79 wickets—a statistic that underscores the very point Rahane was making about inconsistent chances hindering a promising career.
