England Recalls Pope & Lawrence for Pakistan Tests! Bethell Out, Root Captains
England announces squad for Pakistan Tests! Pope & Lawrence return amidst big changes. Joe Root leads as Bethell sidelined. Don't miss this crucial series update!
England has announced its squad for the upcoming Test series against Pakistan, marking a significant transition for the team. Surrey duo Ollie Pope and Dan Lawrence have earned recalls to the 16-man squad for the first two Tests, while Jacob Bethell will unfortunately miss the entire series due to injury. As a result, Jordan Cox is set to be promoted to number three. This three-match series will be England's first Test outing since the retirement of captain Ben Stokes and the departure of head coach Brendon McCullum.
Veteran batsman Joe Root has been reappointed as captain, taking the reins for the first time since July. Marcus Trescothick will step in as interim head coach, guiding the team through this immediate challenge. Stephen Fleming, McCullum's permanent replacement, is expected to begin his tenure when England faces South Africa in December.
Dan Lawrence, who last played a Test for England in a previous series, has been rewarded for his exceptional domestic form. The 29-year-old is currently the second-highest run-scorer in Division One of the County Championship, boasting an impressive 788 runs at an average of 65.66, including five centuries, across just 13 innings. He is slated to bat at number six, aiming to fill the middle-order void left by Stokes' retirement, though he is not considered a like-for-like replacement. Lawrence also contributes with his right-arm off-spin, having taken nine wickets this season.
Ollie Pope, a former vice-captain, returns after an extended period of poor form saw him replaced by Bethell during the final two Ashes Tests and subsequently dropped from the squad against New Zealand. His recall signifies a fresh opportunity to cement his place in the Test side.
The full 16-man squad includes: Joe Root (c), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Jamie Smith, and Josh Tongue.
