Enthusiasts now face a long wait, as a spectacle of this magnitude isn't expected to grace local skies again until 2081. The peak coverage varied slightly by location; in Inverness, 90.74% of the sun was obscured at 7:03 PM, while Edinburgh saw 90.71% coverage at 7:06 PM. Some western areas reportedly experienced over 92% coverage, hinting at fleeting moments of clarity for a lucky few.
Anticipation was palpable in cities like Edinburgh, where crowds gathered on Calton Hill. The city’s astronomical society had organized a viewing event, drawing long queues of people hoping to get their hands on specialized eclipse glasses. Supplies quickly ran out around 6 PM, prompting many to resort to creative, indirect viewing methods, including kitchen colanders, cereal boxes, and homemade pinhole cameras, showcasing the public's enduring fascination with such rare phenomena.
