A warm beverage feels especially unique during the winter months. Maybe it's the cool air or the instant comfort that comes with a hot cup. Winter makes every mug better, whether it's for late-night cocoa or early-morning tea. It may be a mug of coffee that warms the evenings for some, or a cup of spiced chai that begins the day for others. Winter is a great time to slow down, enjoy your drink, and allow each sip to provide a little solace, regardless of your personal preferences. We have compiled a list of some of our favorites if you want to switch things up this season.
1. Masala Chai
Every Indian knows what the'mightea' masala chai is! It is definitely the official winter beverage. During your morning walks or visits to the Dhaba on cold winter days, nothing compares to the spiced and herbaceous kulhar-wali masala chai. A cold winter day will be easier to handle if you take the elixir of life. The homemade versions of masala chai, however, are absolutely delicious! It is, after all, chai!

2. Hot Chocolate
Without hot chocolate, a list of winter beverages would be lacking. Hot chocolate, a rich and decadent mixture of chocolate, cocoa, milk, and optional cinnamon, is a chocolate lover's paradise. It tastes best hot. It tastes great with a dollop of whipped cream or some marshmallows. During the winter, no one should or can refuse hot chocolate. It is a crime!

3. Badam Milk
Almond-flavored Badam milk, a popular household beverage in India, is a warming wintertime beverage. Spices like cinnamon and nutmeg are frequently added to it to enhance its flavor. The traditional Badam milk, sweetened with sugar, will keep you warm if you don't like spice.

4. Besan Sheera
This is a drink that doubles as a dessert! Gram flour is roasted in ghee until it smells golden and nutty, and then it is simmered with milk, jaggery, and warming spices like cardamom and turmeric to make besan sheera. The outcome? A rich, creamy mixture that warms you from the inside out and relieves sore throats. Besan, also known as gram flour, is rich in fiber and vitamin B1. Its sheera is also thought to help with blocked noses, sore throats, and colds and coughs. For added crunch and taste, scatter some nuts on top.

5. Chhang
Locals in the Himalayas turn to Chhang, a homemade beer-like beverage that warms you from the inside out, when it's freezing outside. Made from rice, barley, or millet grains, it ferments to produce a mildly alcoholic, slightly sour beverage. It is served hot in wooden mugs during the winter. It is said to have numerous therapeutic benefits for ailments like the common cold, fevers, allergic rhinitis, and even alcoholism. In Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and portions of Bhutan, chhang is a way of life, and it is the focal point of cold evenings and festivals.

Winter is all about slowing down, enjoying small moments, and finding comfort in warm corners of life. These five drinks don’t just keep you warm; they lift your mood, spark nostalgia, and make the cold days a little sweeter. So this winter, try at least one (or all!) of these. You might just find your new favourite ritual. Would you like a list of winter snacks to pair with these drinks?
