CCI Probes IndiGo Over Flight Disruptions Amid Mass Cancellations
India's antitrust watchdog launches an inquiry into IndiGo after widespread flight disruptions and passenger complaints, signaling potential scrutiny of pricing and dominance in the market.
The Competition Commission of India has initiated an inquiry into IndiGo in response to information filed about disruptions across routes in the aviation sector. Based on an initial assessment, the commission will proceed under the Competition Act, 2002, though it did not disclose the number of complaints or the exact aspects under review. A Bengaluru-based lawyer and other affected passengers have claimed that cancellations and scarce rebooking options amount to abuse of a dominant position in the market. IndiGo cancelled nearly 5,000 flights in the first nine days of December, impacting at least 12.5 lakh passengers.

IndiGo has benefited from a notable shift in market dynamics, with its share rising from about 42% in January 2019 to roughly 65.7% today, following the collapses of Jet Airways and Go First. Air India remains the second-largest operator with around 25.7% market share. The commission's move comes as regulators increasingly scrutinize how airlines set fares and manage capacity during periods of disruption.
The inquiry will examine potential anti-competitive agreements, abuse of dominant position, and merger-related issues under the Competition Act. While the exact scope is to be determined after further assessment, the CCI’s action signals heightened regulatory vigilance in the aviation sector as disruptions ripple through passenger experience and pricing.
Industry observers say the probe could spur reforms in scheduling practices, refund processes, and price transparency, potentially reshaping how airlines respond to delays and cancellations going forward.
