Kozhikode Trains Back on Track After Historic Clock Tower Collapse!

The Kozhikode railway station in Kerala has successfully restored its train services to normal after the dramatic collapse of its century-old clock tower. The structural failure occurred during intense monsoon rains on Thursday, causing significant disruption, but railway officials confirm that services are now operating smoothly.

The iconic clock tower, an architectural landmark situated on platform 2 and housing the Station Master's office and Railway Protection Force, gave way around 11:10 a.m. on Thursday. Falling debris and roofing sheets crashed onto the platform and damaged overhead traction lines, forcing authorities to cut power across platforms 1, 2, and 3. This led to severe delays, with several trains, including the Jan Shatabdi Express, being regulated and halted at nearby stations while railway staff worked to clear the tracks.

"As of now, there is no disruption in train schedule or route. Trains are being operated through tracks 1 and 4 while clearance work continues on Platform 2," a railway official stated. Demolition and clearance of the remaining structure are still underway, being carried out gradually and with adequate safety measures under the supervision of senior officials from the Palakkad Division.

While train services have resumed, questions are now being raised about accountability and potential delays in the station's redevelopment plans. Kozhikode MLAs have reportedly demanded answers. However, railway officials have indicated that no inquiry into the incident has been ordered yet, and the Railways will look into the matter only after the restoration work at the site is fully completed.

This situation highlights the challenges faced by infrastructure during severe weather and the swift response required to maintain essential services.
