Canada designates Lawrence Bishnoi gang a terrorist entity, citing targeted communities
Canada lists the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity, saying the group targets specific communities with terror, violence and intimidation.
The Canadian government designated the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist entity on Monday, with Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree announcing the move. The government said the group is a transnational criminal organization that operates primarily out of India, has a presence in Canada, and is active in areas with significant diaspora communities.
The ministry said the Bishnoi gang engages in murder, shootings, arson and generates terror through extortion and intimidation, and that they create a climate of insecurity in targeted communities by going after their prominent members, businesses and cultural figures. 'Specific communities have been targeted for terror, violence and intimidation by the Bishnoi Gang. Listing this group of criminal terrorists gives us more powerful and effective tools to confront and put a stop to their crimes,' he said.
The listing under Canada’s Criminal Code means the group’s assets in Canada, including property, vehicles or money, can be frozen or seized, and it gives law enforcement more tools to prosecute terrorist offences, including those related to financing, travel and recruitment. There are now 88 listed terrorist entities in Canada, including two pro-Khalistan groups, Babbar Khalsa International and International Sikh Youth Federation.
