The 50kg reptile, a resident of Chester Zoo for two decades, is now fully recovered and cancer-free after battling a persistent cancerous tumour.
Jodie's journey to recovery began after an initial surgery failed to completely remove a tumour that had re-emerged and started invading her jawbone. Faced with this challenge, the dedicated veterinary team at Chester Zoo collaborated with cancer specialists from the University of Liverpool. Together, they adapted electrochemotherapy, a cutting-edge treatment, for use in the snake, marking a significant milestone in animal welfare and medical science.
The procedure itself presented unique challenges. Due to Jodie's impressive size, no standard operating table could accommodate her. Keepers and vets ingeniously improvised, anaesthetising her in her own habitat before carefully transporting her to the zoo’s veterinary centre for the specialized treatment. Their dedication and ingenuity paid off.
Months after the groundbreaking procedure, Jodie Foster is thriving. She is back to her usual "bright and feisty" self, eating normally, and showing no signs of cancer.
