Russia escalates the conflict by launching its powerful Mach 10 Oreshnik missile at Kyiv, hitting residential areas and schools as tensions reach a breaking point.
Ukraine's capital faced a terrifying night as Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Kyiv, deploying the powerful Oreshnik hypersonic missile for the third time in the four-year-long conflict. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the attack, which claimed at least two lives and caused significant damage to residential buildings, schools, and areas near government offices.
The Oreshnik, a weapon that President Vladimir Putin has previously boasted travels at ten times the speed of sound, reportedly struck the city of Bila Tserkva in the Kyiv region. This advanced missile system is designed to carry either conventional or nuclear warheads and is capable of penetrating deep underground bunkers. Putin has described the weapon’s impact as being "like a meteorite," claiming it is currently immune to all existing missile defense systems.
This latest escalation follows a series of high-stakes strikes from both sides. Ukraine recently targeted a college in a Russian-occupied town, resulting in 18 deaths, and reportedly struck an elite drone military unit. In response, Moscow launched a combined force of 600 strike drones and 90 missiles. While Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, the sheer scale of the "hazelnut tree" missile's deployment has raised global alarms.
Despite the intensifying pressure, Ukraine continues to lean on its rapidly growing domestic drone industry to hold the line against the invasion. However, the use of Mach 10 weaponry marks a dangerous new chapter in the war, as air raid sirens continue to blare across the country and the threat of further retaliation looms large over the region.
