CorroHealth Infotech Private Ltd. has abruptly terminated the services of hundreds of employees in Kozhikode and Kochi, sparking widespread concern and anger. Approximately 300 employees in Kozhikode and over 500 in Kochi have reportedly lost their jobs without prior notice, leaving many in a state of uncertainty. Employees allege that their dismissals might be directly linked to their attempts to flag persistent labor rule violations within the company.
Staff members in Kozhikode revealed that they had previously brought issues of labor rule violations to government authorities. According to employees, despite a standard work schedule of 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., they were frequently coerced into working until 9 p.m., often exceeding 12 hours a day. Furthermore, mandatory weekend work on Saturdays and Sundays was common, irrespective of statutory day-offs, citing pending tasks. Employees also claimed that their performance evaluations were negatively impacted if they took their entitled statutory leaves.
These concerns were reportedly escalated to the Labour department five to six months ago, leading to warnings issued to CorroHealth regarding their practices. However, employees state that after a brief period, the company reverted to its old ways. The recent terminations have disproportionately affected those who spoke out or adhered to their rights. Even staff members who had recently relocated from other company offices, such as Coimbatore, were among those laid off, with their requests for relocation to retain their jobs being denied.
The laid-off employees are now pinning their hopes on crucial talks scheduled for July 10 in Kochi. This meeting will bring together government officials and representatives from CorroHealth management. Originally planned for an earlier date, the company reportedly requested more time to prepare its representatives. The outcome of these discussions is eagerly awaited, as it will determine the next steps for hundreds of families impacted by these sudden job losses and could set a precedent for worker rights in the region.
