Reservation Row: Protesters Detained at Jantar Mantar Demanding Economic-Based Quotas
Chaos erupts at Jantar Mantar as anti-reservation protesters defy police orders, leading to over 50 detentions. Learn about their demands for economic-based assistance, not caste.
Over 50 individuals were detained at Jantar Mantar in Delhi as protesters from the "Reservation Hatao Andolan" movement gathered despite authorities explicitly denying permission for the demonstration at the iconic site. The protest, which saw a significant turnout, led to a standoff with security personnel as demonstrators refused to vacate the area, sparking arrests and heightened security.
The "Reservation Hatao Andolan" gained considerable momentum through an Instagram page of the same name, which boasts an impressive 5.6 million followers. The page had called upon its vast online community to participate in the in-person demonstration on August 21st, aiming to voice their concerns regarding India's reservation policies.
At the heart of the movement are several key demands centered on a fundamental shift in the approach to government assistance and reservations. Protesters argued that the government should prioritize the economic condition of candidates over caste alone. "A poor person, irrespective of caste, should be provided assistance for education, coaching and other needs," stated one protester associated with the Akhil Bharatiya Kshatriya Mahasabha.
Another significant demand is for a comprehensive reassessment of the existing reservation system to ensure its intended purpose is being met and that benefits are genuinely reaching the most disadvantaged at the grassroots level. The movement also advocates for the introduction of a "creamy-layer" criterion or the strengthening of income-based exclusion within reserved categories, alongside expanding targeted support programs like scholarships and fee assistance for economically weaker individuals. The protesters urged a review of policies concerning Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes, including those for higher education.
Delhi Police confirmed that permission for a "peaceful protest of maximum of 500 persons" had been granted for Ramlila Ground, not Jantar Mantar. However, the organizers and participants chose to proceed with their demonstration at Jantar Mantar, leading to the detentions and the tense situation.
