FIRs Filed Against Kashmir MP Ruhullah and Ex-Srinagar Mayor Over Protests

The Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday filed First Information Reports against National Conference MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and former Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu, accusing them of creating fear, disturbing public order, and inciting unlawful activities. Investigators say credible inputs showed circulation of false and misleading content on digital and social media with the intent to stir unrest and spread distorted narratives.

Two FIRs were registered under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at the Cyber Police Station, Srinagar. A police spokesperson said the investigations are underway and that further legal action will follow as warranted under law.

The cases come as Kashmir has seen three days of street protests over the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei on February 28. Ruhullah and Mattu had shared posts related to the protests on their social media handles, with Ruhullah noting changes to his security detail and a suspended Facebook account in a post that some described as a challenge to authorities.

Police officials stressed the aim to curb misinformation and maintain public order, while urging people to exercise restraint and verify information before sharing content online.
