TN Political Storm: Stalin Accuses CM Vijay of 'MLA Shopping,' Palaniswami Criticizes Water Stance

Tamil Nadu's political landscape is abuzz with sharp accusations and strategic maneuvers following recent Assembly elections. Opposition leaders, including DMK president M.K. Stalin and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, have launched strong criticisms against the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

M.K. Stalin has sensationally alleged that Chief Minister Vijay is engaged in a "shopping spree" for AIADMK MLAs, attempting to weaken the opposition by inducing them to join TVK. Stalin went further, branding the TVK government as a "xerox copy" of the BJP, criticizing its approach to women's safety. He claimed that TVK functionaries were involved in recent crimes and that the party removed victims instead of taking decisive action, raising serious questions about the state's governance. Democratic forces, he asserted, should question what the MLAs are receiving in exchange for their shift in allegiance.

Meanwhile, AIADMK's Edappadi K. Palaniswami also weighed in, criticizing the TVK regime on critical state issues. Palaniswami slammed the government for allegedly failing to exert pressure on the Centre to halt Karnataka's bid to construct a dam in Mekedatu. He also accused the TVK of not taking sufficient steps to release water from the Mettur dam and secure Tamil Nadu's rightful share of Cauvery water from the neighboring state. Palaniswami urged Chief Minister Vijay, given his efforts to include Congress legislators in his cabinet, to leverage his influence with the Congress government in Karnataka to resolve these vital water disputes.

These criticisms come as the AIADMK begins district-wise consultations to review its performance in the recent Assembly elections. Addressing party colleagues from Kancheepuram, Palaniswami acknowledged the effective use of social media by TVK as a factor in their election results. He emphasized the importance for AIADMK to better utilize social media platforms to disseminate the party's stance on various issues and highlight the shortcomings of the state government. During these internal discussions, a view was expressed that children of party leaders, including Palaniswami’s son Mithun, should be more actively involved in party work.

In Kancheepuram district, the AIADMK contested three out of four seats but drew a blank, despite their nominee V. Somasundaram being the runner-up in the Kancheepuram constituency. The party secured approximately 2.01 lakh votes with a vote share of about 24% in the district. They finished third in Alandur and Sriperumpudur, retaining their deposits, while their ally PMK also lost in Uthiramerur. These reviews underscore the AIADMK's efforts to regroup and strengthen its position amidst the ongoing political challenges.
