A Delhi court sent the suspect to eight days' police custody as two Assembly security officers were suspended after a SUV breached the Delhi Assembly gates, highlighting security gaps.
A Delhi court on Tuesday remanded Sarbjit Singh in eight days' police custody for further questioning, a day after he allegedly drove an SUV through Gate No. 2 and breached the Delhi Assembly premises. The incident unfolded while Speaker Vijender Gupta was present on the premises, and CCTV footage showed the accused spending at least five minutes inside before driving away. He was arrested nearly two hours later from Roop Nagar.
In a related development, the Assembly’s security unit suspended a Sub-Inspector and an Assistant Sub-Inspector as part of the investigations into the breach. The suspensions underscore concerns about the security arrangements at the legislative complex.
Authorities described the security lapse as a serious shortcoming, prompting calls to overhaul the system. The Speaker publicly acknowledged gaps and said revamping the security apparatus was essential to prevent a repeat of the incident.
As the investigation progresses, officials say a thorough review of security protocols—ranging from barricades and vehicle checks to CCTV coverage—is underway, with an emphasis on accountability for those responsible and a plan to strengthen the assembly's defenses.
