Dr. Anna Murgatroyd, a lecturer in hydrology at Newcastle University, highlighted the complex situation. Reservoirs across the country remain at "exceptionally low" levels, meaning a significant and sustained period of rain is required to replenish water stocks adequately for next summer. The current downpours, while heavy in places, are often not enough to soak into the parched ground effectively, especially after such a prolonged dry spell.
The paradox of drought ending rain is the increased risk of flash flooding. When ground is baked hard and dry, it struggles to absorb sudden, heavy rainfall. This can lead to water running off rapidly, overwhelming drainage systems and causing localized flooding, even as the broader drought persists underground. This risk is a serious concern for communities as thundery showers continue to sweep across the UK.
