Tech magnate Elon Musk is facing serious legal scrutiny in Wisconsin after a state election commission found probable cause that he may have violated anti-bribery laws. The allegations stem from his offer of $1 million checks to voters during the 2025 Wisconsin Supreme Court election.
The Wisconsin Elections Commission recently voted 5-1 in a closed session to refer two complaints against Musk to the district attorney. These complaints originated from voters in both Milwaukee and Green Bay, raising concerns about Musk's actions leading up to the crucial state election.
According to the commission, probable cause exists to suggest Musk broke state law, which explicitly prohibits offering anything of value to induce a person to vote. Musk reportedly handed out $1 million checks at a rally shortly before the election. Two of the three individuals who received these checks in person were at a Green Bay rally and were identified as spokespeople for Musk's America PAC. The commission also noted a social media post by Musk offering $1 million to people who voted in the election as part of their findings.
Wisconsin's Democratic Attorney General, Josh Kaul, had reportedly attempted to prevent Musk from distributing these checks to voters. The Brown County District Attorney's office now has a 40-day window to decide whether to press criminal charges against Musk for election bribery. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for election finance laws and the role of prominent figures in political campaigns.
This development follows earlier reports of Musk distributing $1 million daily to "random" voters during the 2024 Presidential Campaign in exchange for signing an America PAC petition. However, his team later admitted that the recipients were not, in fact, chosen at random. While the commission's current focus is on the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, the pattern of offering large sums in connection with voting has drawn considerable attention and criticism.
