U.S. President Donald Trump weighed in on the ongoing conflict in Iran on Friday, echoing Vice President J.D. Vance's earlier assessment that the situation is far from a full-blown "war." Speaking to reporters, Trump dismissed the months of on-and-off attacks in West Asia as "small potatoes" for the United States, further downplaying the severity of the engagement.
His comments come a day after Vice President Vance stated he wouldn't use the term "war" to describe the U.S. involvement, even as Iran continues to launch retaliatory attacks, including a recent strike on U.S. Gulf ally Kuwait. Vance also avoided setting a timeline for the conflict's end, especially with crucial midterm elections looming in November.
Despite the administration's minimized rhetoric, the conflict has been anything but "small" in terms of cost.
U.S. taxpayers have footed a bill exceeding $37.5 billion, and 18 American service members have tragically lost their lives. However, President Trump noted that the death toll is comparatively lower than in some other recent U.S. conflicts.
Adding a new dimension to the situation, Trump also hinted at potential escalation, telling reporters that the United States might strike Iran's heavily fortified Pickaxe Mountain very soon. This site, known to host deeply buried tunnel complexes, is located near Iran's damaged Natanz uranium enrichment facility, making any potential strike there a significant development in the ongoing tensions.
