In a dramatic and highly unusual maneuver, Donald Trump reportedly executed a secret plane swap last month as he departed a NATO summit in Turkey, allegedly in response to a credible Iranian threat. This elaborate ruse involved the former President being covertly transferred from Air Force One to a military aircraft, with the help of an airport catering truck.
According to reports from US media, including the Washington Post, Trump initially boarded Air Force One publicly at Ankara airport, in full view of television cameras. However, this was merely a diversion. He was then secretly whisked away to a smaller C-32A military aircraft, a modified Boeing 757 typically used by the Vice-President, via a catering truck. This truck was elevated to plane level on the opposite side of the aircraft, ensuring the transfer went unnoticed.
Officials briefed CBS News, the BBC's US partner, that US intelligence had detected a "credible Iranian threat" to fire a missile at the presidential plane. The White House has not officially confirmed the secret switch. This clandestine operation took place shortly after Trump had, during the summit in Ankara, declared himself "Iran's number one target."
Adding to the tensions, this event occurred just a day after the US renewed military strikes on Iran, following a breakdown in negotiations between Washington and Tehran. Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also reportedly boarded the C-32A separately using external stairs, a measure taken to make the departure appear routine.
Journalists and some White House staff who boarded Air Force One for the flight were reportedly told to close their window shades and remained completely unaware that the President was no longer on board. Trump then flew to the UK en route to the US, having successfully completed his stealthy departure from Turkey.
