Bad Connection? Virgin Media Fined £28M for Blocking Customer Exits
Virgin Media faces a massive £28 million fine from Ofcom for making it nearly impossible for customers to cancel contracts. Millions of calls mishandled! Find out how this affects you and what comes next.
Virgin Media has been hit with a staggering £28 million fine by Ofcom, the UK's communications regulator, for making it excessively difficult for customers to cancel their contracts. This record-breaking penalty comes after an investigation revealed that millions of phone calls from customers were "likely mishandled" over a nearly three-year period, from January 2022 to September 2024.
According to Ofcom, call agents at Virgin Media intentionally delayed or prevented customers from cancelling their services and switching to a competitor. The regulator explicitly states that its rules demand telecoms providers ensure their conditions and procedures do not act as a disincentive for customers wishing to end their contracts. Virgin Media's actions were found to be in direct violation of these principles, creating significant barriers for consumers.
Natalie Black, Ofcom's group director for infrastructure and connectivity, expressed strong disapproval, calling Virgin Media's behaviour "pretty shocking." She highlighted that Ofcom had attempted to resolve the issue informally with the company years ago, but "there wasn't the will to do that." Black further emphasized that "The facts are clear. Virgin Media made it harder for customers to cancel their contracts and then did not fully cooperate with our investigation."
In response to the fine, Virgin Media stated that it has "resolved all formal customer complaints from this period providing redress where appropriate." However, Ofcom is now mandating that Virgin Media must check every affected customer who complained to ensure they have received the compensation or other remedies they were entitled to, with a deadline of six months for this compliance.
