Festember: A Fest To Remember, and likely a fest you’ll never forget

There’s a kind of stillness that settles over Tiruchirappalli in the weeks before September, the twanging quiet of a campus swallowing its breath before it exhales wholly. Then the third week arrives, and NIT Trichy swells into something else altogether. Nearly eighteen thousand students, drawn from more than five hundred colleges, cross its gates, and for three days the institute becomes less a campus than a small, restless country of its own making. This is Festember, “A Fest To Remember," though generations of overworked students have also lovingly misread it as “Fest In September.” Festember, now in its fifty-second year, and it has never once forgotten how to arrive.

It began, improbably, in 1975 with nothing of its own; no funding, no certainty, only the conviction and sheer audacity of students who believed a festival could be built from will alone; a genuinely insane way to begin what has become one of India’s hugest cultural fests ever. Five decades later, that conviction has deepened into something closer to inheritance, passed each year to a new set of hands that always end up knowing what to do with it.

Along the pathways, stalls unfold like small, temporary kingdoms; food choices sprawl across the entirety of CEESAT, including food carts trading in items from steaming rolls to icy-cold sugarcane juice to over-caffeinated concoctions designed to keep you up through the one a.m. proshows. Merchandise stands glint, attractive and magnetic, always displaying the trinkets people desperately want and competing for the 200 you were probably supposed to save up. It’s easy, walking through them, to lose track of both time and money, and easier still to not mind.

Beyond competitions, the fest also runs a guest lecture circuit: Carpe Diem, Vox Populi, Talks by The Firelight, and Ad Meliora, which has hosted an eclectic guest list ranging from actor Dhruv Vikram and Adah Sharma, to Money Heist's Alex Rodrigo, to singer Sid Sriram, cricketing legend Jonty Rhodes, and chess grandmaster Viswanathan Anand. It’s the rare event where you can watch a fashion show at six and get life advice from a Grandmaster by eight.

Numbers alone can’t quite capture what eighteen thousand students converging on one campus actually feels like, but they are, at least, a place to begin. Participants from over five hundred colleges arrive each year, filling every available inch of hostel space, spilling into shared rooms and borrowed floors, united by a shared willingness to travel across states for the couple days that will leave them, invariably and simultaneously, exhausted and unwilling to have missed it.

Festember’s architecture rests on the shoulders of nine clusters: Music, Dance, Fashion, Arts, Gaming, Dramatics, Literary Arts, Photography, each a stage for a devotion that students seem continuously capable of sustaining. Colleges arrive not solely to participate but to win, for a prize pool exceeding sixteen lakh rupees and for the Festember Rolling Trophy, a name that carries its own history. It was once called the Ilayaraja Trophy, christened after the maestro himself performed at the festival’s very first edition in 1978; a detail that feels less like trivia and more like the origin of an entire myth.

But it is at night, inside the Golden Jubilee Convention Hall, a venue built with a capacity exceeding five thousand, that Festember reveals what it has been building toward all along; where the days find their true center of gravity. Bodies gather in thousands and thousands beneath a single sky, the day’s competitions and lectures set aside for something more communal, more immediate: the shared anticipation of a name about to be announced, a first chord about to be struck.

Over the years, that stage has belonged to an extraordinary lineage of performers. Ilaiyaraaja himself, the composer for whom the original trophy was named, returned the favor of his own legacy by performing at the festival that would come to honor him. Benny Dayal and Amit Trivedi have brought their own distinct energies to the hall, as have Sunidhi Chauhan and Jonita Gandhi, Karthik and Neeti Mohan, Vijay Yesudas, Rajhesh Vaidhya, and DJ Papa Balooshy, alongside bands like Masala Coffee and Mangas the Mango Men. Each name represents an artist choosing, again, to make this particular ground theirs for one night, and an audience choosing, again, to cross the length of the country to be there when they do.

There’s something almost ritualistic in how these nights unfold with the same anticipation building each year, the same collective loss of self in sound and light, even as the specific names on the lineup shift from edition to edition. It is, perhaps, the clearest expression of what Festember actually is beneath its clusters and stalls and prize pools: not simply a competition, but a gathering, built new each September on the same fifty-one-year-old foundation.

By the last night, when the final proshow has ended and the crowds have begun, reluctantly, to disperse, the campus will grow quiet again: not the stillness of before, that patient, waiting quiet, but something heavier, fonder, harder to name. Buses will carry students back to five hundred different colleges, carrying with them exhaustion, memory, and this kind of fondness that only survives events too intense to fully process while they are happening. NIT Trichy will settle back into its ordinary rhythms, lecture halls filling again, banners slowly coming down.

But see, the melodrama isn’t permanence. Festember doesn’t truly end each year. It waits, goliath and patient, for the next September to call it back.
