Telangana Fights Food Fraud: New Law & Toll-Free Line Coming!

Hyderabad is abuzz with news that the Telangana government is gearing up to introduce a robust anti-adulteration law. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has taken a firm stand against the rampant issues of food adulteration, excessive pesticide use in agriculture, and the circulation of counterfeit medicines, directing officials to formulate strict new legislation. This move comes after a high-level meeting held in Hyderabad on Saturday, July 18, where the alarming health impacts on citizens were extensively discussed.
The Chief Minister expressed deep concerns over various malpractices affecting public health. Discussions highlighted how fruits, vegetables, milk, and other food products are being adulterated, often with chemicals used to prematurely ripen fruits or extend the shelf life of vegetables and milk. These indiscriminate practices are directly linked to people falling ill. Furthermore, the meeting addressed the extensive use of fertilizers and pesticides in cultivation, which has led to chemical residues in agricultural products, sometimes causing rejection of these items by other countries.
A significant point of contention raised was the unchecked sale of products labeled as "organic." Despite being sold at higher prices, there's currently a lack of proper systems to validate these claims, leaving consumers vulnerable to deception. Counterfeit medicines also posed a serious threat, compounding the health crisis.
To combat these issues effectively, CM Reddy has instructed officials to undertake study tours to countries with comprehensive anti-adulteration laws. The aim is to learn best practices and incorporate them into Telangana's new legal framework. A detailed representation will be prepared, which will then form the basis for drafting a Bill. This Bill will be presented for discussion in the State Assembly, and crucially, suggestions from the public will be invited, ensuring a democratic and inclusive approach.
In an immediate step to empower citizens, the Chief Minister has also called for the establishment of a toll-free number. This dedicated helpline will enable people to provide information and report instances of adulteration, acting as a direct channel between the public and enforcement agencies. As a pilot, these anti-adulteration activities will first be rolled out in the State’s Core Urban Region (CURE), with plans to expand across Telangana after refining the implementation process. This initiative marks a significant stride towards ensuring public health and consumer safety in the state.
