The United Kingdom is experiencing an unprecedented rush for solar eclipse glasses, with major retailers and local shops completely selling out ahead of a historic celestial event. This Wednesday's solar eclipse is set to be the most significant in the UK for the next 54 years, driving people to travel long distances in a desperate search for protective eyewear.
The Royal Greenwich Observatory reported selling approximately 15,000 pairs of glasses in the past month alone, completely depleting their stock. While admission to their on-site viewing event is fully booked, the observatory will offer a free live stream on their website and YouTube channel, ensuring everyone can safely witness the spectacle.
Smaller stockists have been overwhelmed by the demand. Ali Raza, owner of an AM2PM convenience store in Whitechapel, London, shared that he had to turn away countless hopeful buyers. He recounted the incredible lengths customers were going to, with people traveling from Surrey, Southend-on-Sea, Southampton, and Birmingham just to find glasses.
"Today I already sold 6,000 pairs. At 2.30am we had a delivery from Spain and by 9.30am we sold out everything," Raza stated, highlighting the intense pressure and rapid sell-out experienced by his store.
The eclipse, which will see more than 90% of the sun obscured by the moon, will occur between 6:17 pm and 8:06 pm on August 12. This level of obscuration is the highest the UK has witnessed since the total eclipse in 1999. While most of the UK will experience significant coverage, Devon, Cornwall, and the westernmost parts of Pembrokeshire in Wales are expected to see the eclipse at its fullest, with 94% to 96% of the sun hidden from view. Officials in Exmoor National Park, a prime viewing spot, are also anticipating large crowds.
